Lily ran a hand through her hair as she walked through the courtyard, holding one of her books against her waist with one arm. The sliding of her flip-slops against the pavement could be heard anywhere. Why was it so quiet? She sighed softly as the wind picked up her red hair and blew it across her shoulders lovingly. She wondered where everyone was, then figured most of them would probably be at lunch. She had decided to skip lunch that day and just spend a day under the tree in the courtyard.
So, she finally reached her destination. Her smile gleamed as she took a seat on the green grass and leaned up against the tree. She crossed her legs so no one could see up her skirt and smiled, opening her book. She looked up at the leaves above her, smiling. She had been there quite frequently the past few days, and pronounced it to be her new spot.

Remus walked down the many flights of stairs to the ground floor, looking through the doors of the great hall at all the various students eating and laughing with their friends. He knew he should be in there with his friends but he just wasn't in the mood for such a loud and cramped room.
Walking across the Entrance Hall to the large, wooden doors that led outside, Remus slipped through the doors and headed towards the one spot he knew would be empty right now. The courtyard. Once entering the courtyard, Remus glanced around for other students but the only one he did see was a girl with red hair sitting under a tree. He walked quietly towards her, recognizing her more and more with every step. Lily Evans was the girl he was now looking at. He considered a friend to some degree since they could always study together and not worry about the other one goofing off.
Stopping a few feet from her, Remus cleared his throat and forced a smile onto his rough and torn face. "Hello Lily" he said simply.

Lily's eyes were interrupted from their scanning of pages by a voice that hit her ears. She looked up into the face of Remus, Moony, and smiled very gently. They weren't completely the 'best' of friends, but they were decently aquainted. She smiled gently up at him, even though her heart wasn't in the mood for smiling. She just wanted to sit there with her book, and read. Because she was in dear missing of someone and she wasn't even sure why.
James Potter had captured her heart. And yes, even if she had had the crush on Severus, James was now who she wanted. They were not together, and it hurt her so much. He was so perfect, even if he was immature. She bit her bottom lip gently and took in a breath before speaking. "How are you Remus?" she asked gently. Her eyes glittered from the bare sun that shone in through the brilliantly green leaves above them.

He shrugged slightly, noticing the forced smile on her face as well which made him begin to wonder. He walked over to a nearby bench and sat down, staring at her. "I'm fine. I could be better but then I bet we all could" he said setting his bag down on the bench behind him. He looked at her again and raised an eyebrow slightly at her. "Is something wrong?" he asked softly. For some reason since he was a young boy he could always be able to tell when something was wrong with someone else.
Standing up again but leaving his bag where it was, Remus walked back over to her and sat next to her "What's wrong? I know there's something wrong"

Lily sighed gently as her heart began to beat faster with every step he took towards her. He had asked her what she feared most, and she gulped softly. A gentle wind picked up and blew her hair back against the tree and she turned her head to get her hair off the tree as an excuse, really. She bit her bottom lip and turned her head back to Remus to note that he was closer to her and sitting beside her.
"Remus...I don't know if I can talk to you about it.." she sighed gently, looking at the ground as she could just feel the tension of tears building up in her precious, delicate eyes. Lily was so worried that maybe Remus would go and tell James that she had almost been crying over him. They would probably all make fun of her and laugh about it. She sighed as she bit down on her lip, feeling an icy tear touch her left cheek. Danget.

He looked at her "Come on Lily. When have I ever not kept a secret that you've told me?" he asked sitting down more comfortably on the ground. Ever since their first year they had shared secrets with each other. Some ranging from silly to more serious.
Looking at her again, Remus noticed the one tear touching her cheek and realized what was wrong was more serious than he was thinking before. He sighed and reached his hand out towards her cheek and gently wiped away the tear. "What is it Lily? It must be important if you're starting to cry about it" he said placing an arm around her shoulders.

Lily gulped gently as she began crying more. She just couldn't help it. How could she like someone so much that probably didn't even care about her? Not even as a friend. James was always so goofy and loveable, but he always goofed off and never seemed like he was playing around. He even joked her sometimes and she secretly cried in the common room, but of course he was too busy looking at other girls. Why couldn't he just notice her as more than a friend?
Lily looked to Remus as tears hit her cheeks and she bit her bottom lip. "Remus...why does James act like he does?" she asked. The teasing, the goofing off, the joking...it all made her want him so much more than she already did. But why? He never was nice to her anymore and she just didn't understand why. But she couldn't help like him so.

He frowned, hearing her say James' name. "James? Thats what your so upset about?" he asked confused but nonetheless pulled her gently into his arms, hugging her gently. "I don't know. He's just that way. He doesn't know when others like yourself are looking at him unless they make it very, very obvious but even then he has a tendency not to notice"
He gently pulled back and wiped her tears away some "It's nothing to do with you. Thats just the way he is sadly. If you want him to change then you have a lot of work ahead of you" he said softly, looking into her eyes.

Lily cried even harder and hugged Remus tightly. She buried her head in his shoulder as her arms naturally wrapped her arms around his waist. She couldn't help but know that his words made sense. James was just like that and he wasn't going to change. She sighed softly and brought her head up, looking at him. She probably looked like a mess now, but at the time she didn't really care. Remus was a friend and what he spoke was true. James wouldn't change.
She felt his hands gently wipe away her tears and she licked the soft, fallen salt away from her delicate lips. "I know I know..it's just hard.." she said softly, looking at him with interest. He was really a good friend to help her like this. Really.
