James nodded slightly, unsure of what to say. It was obvious that he was upset with what she had said. "When?" he asked her softly, tilting his head to the side and moving his hand to hold himself up. It probably would have been a bit awkward, had he been thinking about the current positioning of the two, but his thoughts were elsewhere.
No wonder Lily hadn't liked him. He had hurt her. He wasn't sure how, or when, but he had. And he hadn't even known it. That was probably the worst part. What person, in their right mind, would willingly go out with someone who hurt them before they even started dating? It made sense not to get along with them, to turn them down every time they tried to get close to you... to hate them. Did she hate him?
James didn't like the way the conversation had changed. Sure, he didn't like being confused... but he preferred it to being upset over hurting someone who he cared a lot about. She must have realized by now that he did, but still... she had seemed like she didn't care. It made sense. She didn't care if he cared for her, because he had hurt her and she couldn't forgive him. Right?
Well, it was confusing. But yeah. That had to be it. [/sub]

Lily looked up at him, looking into his eyes as more tears came from her eyes. The tension of the two was now completely dropped and she felt comfortable around him. But, she kept feeling her heart beating faster. She wasn't sure how to go about this. "Everytime you kid around with me James...I mean I know you're only playing, but sometimes when you say mean things to me it hurts," she said softly. Her tears ceased as she felt like he was feeling guilty.
She hated making him feel bad. Lily felt like she was the one to blame for this. She sighed as she looked up at him. Did he hate her? Sometimes Lily felt that way, but she didn't anymore. She almost felt as if he liked her more than a frend, but she wasn't sure and she surely couldn't get her hopes up. If only she just knew..if only she just could tell him how she felt. But then Lily got to thinking..maybe if she told him how she felt, she would understand more. Sure, there was always the possibility of him saying he didn't feel that way towards her. But then again, how would she ever know he didn't? She sighed and bit her lip and looked up into his eyes. "James..." she whispered softly.

James chewed the inside of his cheek, unsure of how to respond. He didn't mean to hurt her, but would she believe that? He averted his eyes for a few moments, instead choosing to look at the less-beautiful spot of grass beside her. But, as fascinating as the grass was, he couldn't look away from Lily for long. The expression on her face as he stared into her tear-filled eyes was heart-wrenching for James. Why did she have to appear so... vulnerable? Did she think he had nerves of steel? He had been trying to get this woman for the past three years and she sits there just oh-so-easy for him to just grab and... snog. He bit his lip, then, forcing himself to lean away from her slightly and not take advantage of the situation.
As she said his name he tilted his head to the side, not sure how to respond. It seemed like she wanted to say something more, but wasn't sure how to go about it. Her confusion bothered him, too. It's like, he wanted to help her. But he didn't know how. "Yeah?" he asked quietly, lifting his free hand to ruffle his hair. Sure, it was a rather obnoxious thing -- only because Lily hated it -- but it had become a habit for him. It was hard to stop. [/sub]

Lily breathed softly as she looked up at him, feeling his breath on her neck still. She just wanted to reach up and grab him and hug him tightly. She wished she could just be in his arms but she wasn't sure how she could get him to see how much she liked him. She sighed gently and watched as he looked away. Why was it so hard for him to look at her? It was probably because she wasn't that pretty. Lily had never thought she was that pretty, even if some people detested it and said she was crazy for even thinking it. She sighed and gulped gently.
She watched him ruffle his hair and she sighed, clenching her eyes shut tightly. She opened them and didn't know how to answer his question. She rolled out from under him and stood away from him, crossing her arms across her chest as tears hit her cheeks. Her hair fell in her face and some strands stuck to her cheek from her tears, as if it was paper reacting to glue. She sighed and sniffled softly. "I like you James.." she whispered softly. She wasn't even sure if he heard her. But she had said it, truthfully and whole-heartedly. The wind and everything around them now knew, and it felt like a huge boulder had been lifted off her chest. She sighed as tears fell down her cheek more, wondering how far the wind would carry her words.

James was, for once in his life, completely speechless. At first, he had been rather upset that she got up and walked away from him, but he had managed to stomp the hurt down and try to focus on making Lily feel better. But, she was confessing to him? Now? He stared at her in disbelief, shutting his mouth so at least he wouldn't look horribly stupid.
"Are you serious?" he asked her softly. He was quiet for a moment, waiting eagerly for a response, before standing up and walking over to her. Maybe that's not what she was looking for in a reply. "I... er... I really, really like you too, Lily. But, you already know that..." he trailed off, eyes leaving her face to stare at the lake. It was starting to get dark, but the sun still glittered on the water and made it change all sorts of different colors. It was beautiful. James looked away from it, eyes focusing on the most beautiful sight on the grounds, Lily. [/sub]

Lily's tear-filled eyes placed upon James who came to her as she turned around, facing him. She wiped away the tears that fell upon her cheeks and looked at him with interest. Her heart was beating ever-so-fast and she had no idea on how to control it. She was obviously in love, and it was just so overwhelming. She listened to him, first shocked that he could even ask that question. But then a smile placed upon her soft, pink lips as he said he liked her too. "But James, I didn't know that...I knew you liked me, but not still," she whispered softly.
She chuckled softly as she wiped a few more tears away. "I can't believe even after saying that we're still arguing..even if it is brief," she said softly, chuckling. Her eyes met his and she smiled whole-heartedly. She took a step closer to him and could feel his warm breath against her neck once more. She looked up into his eyes and smiled. "Would it be horrible if I kissed you right now?" she asked, biting her lip gently as she wanted so badly to look away. But her heart wouldn't let her look away, not now. Not now that he had already won her over.

James stared at Lily, his eyes soft as he gazed at Lily. He couldn't stop the crooked smile that was gracing his lips, and he probably wouldn't have tried anyway. It didn't matter anymore, did it? He tilted his head to the side, taking a step closer to Lily as she posted her question to him. Of course, it wouldn't be horrible. It'd be wonderful and would pretty much be the best thing that had ever happened thus far in the Head Boy's life. But he didn't say that. As a matter of fact, he didn't say anything.
He stepped forward, instead, a hand lifted to brush her cheek. He leaned towards her, tongue darting out to lick his lips before he pressed them to hers. He closed his eyes tightly, his other arm moving around her waist and pulling her closer. The kiss was perfect for a first, short and sweet. As James pulled away from Lily, he buried his face into her hair and breathed deeply. She smelled wonderful... better than he had ever imagined, actually. [/sub]

Lily thought he didn't respond because he didn't want to hurt her feelings, but she smiled as he leaned towards her. She smiled up at him and kissed him back, pressing her delicate hands against his chest. She closed her eyes tight and held the moment, their lips pressing against each other's for the first time. She smiled as he pulled away and she layed her head against his chest. He smelled just like she thought he would, which made her smile even greater.
Lily held her eyes closed still as she rested her head against his chest. She wrapped her arms around his waist and smiled as she remembered the scent of him. She was in love and she could tell it. Of course, she wouldn't say it right then because they weren't even officially going out. Truly, he had her heart though. And this pronounced how much she really cared for him, and Lily also now knew how much he liked her. She smiled as she opened her eyes partially and looked up, leaning her chin against his chest to smile up at him.

James held Lily close, resting his chin on the top of her head. His height was rather convenient at a moment like this. He smiled into her hair, feeling her head tilt up slightly and pulled away from the warm embrace... but only silghtly.
"So, um... Wanna go out sometime?" he asked, his crooked smile bigger than ever. He knew she'd say yes. Well, actually, he hoped... that small part of him that was still unsure of the whole thing had a few doubts. But he was sure that she wouldn't just confess to him and turn him down again. It didn't make sense. But then again, Lily never had. [/sub]

[colo=red]Lily smiled as she felt his heart beat against her chest, wondering if he could feel hers too. If so, it'd be like they shared one heart..how cute was that! She smiled up into those wonderful, deep eyes of his. He was so important to her, and she'd always known it, she had just been so scared of letting herself show it.
She listened to his question and smiled, nodding as she wrapped her arms a bit tighter around him, still looking up into those marvelous eyes. Lily smiled as she whispered "Yes". She smiled and leaned up to kiss his chin and did so quite curtly. She giggled softly and smiled up at him, still feeling as though this was fairytale.

James' smile grew even larger than it had been before as he leaned down and brushed his lips over Lily's cheekbone. "So... er... What now?" he asked her with a slightly awkward chuckle. The moment wasn't at all awkward, just... different. Very different. And sudden, too.
But James didn't mind. He had been waiting for this for years. The fact that it hadn't occured to Lily that James really did like her was the thing that surprised him the most. He had been asking her out almost constantly until this year, when he figured he'd try a different approach.
Would things have come out differently if he had continued with his obnoxious antics? He wondered. [/sub]

Lily smiled up at him and giggled, shrugging. She lifted her head and ran a hand through her hair, beaming at him. She really wasn't sure what they were supposed to do. She was really still surprised they had had their first kiss and that they were going to go out. It all happened so suddenly, but life comes at you fast when you're least expecting it.
She grinned as she thought about what they could do. "Hmm..well I was swimming before...you want to swim? Or we could go to the room" she said softly, referring to the room of requirement. Not everyone knew about it, which is why she spoke in such a hushed tone. Lily loved the feeling that she was one of the few people that knew about the room.

James shrugged. "How about the room?" he suggested. The truth was, he was a terrible swimmer. He was more likely to drown than tread water... even if he could touch the bottom. And then there was the fact that there was a giant squid lurking in the depths of the lake. It was enough to make the Gryffindor boy shudder. And he did.
He reluctantly released Lily from the embrace that he had been holding her in, instead taking her hand and glancing towards the doors of the school. He wasn't sure, he realized, why they would go to the room of requirement. They could just go to the head's quarters if they wanted to be alone. But, he didn't say this. He'd just go along with whatever, it's not like he had much of a preference. He just wanted to be with Lily. [/sub]

Lily smiled as he let go of her and took her hand. She giggled slightly and gave his hand a squeeze, then started to walk with him towards the school. Little crunched leaves fell under her occasionally as she walked down the path, thinking to herself of how wonderful this day was. It was in fact one of the best days of her life, she thought, as she looked up to him and smiled.
He was such a sweetheart and his smell, kiss, and touch was everything that she had imagined. She smiled and blushed a soft pink before loooking down at the ground and knowing how lucky she was. James could probably get so much of a better girl than herself, and she was just so happy that his heart was hers.

James looked over at Lily as they walked in silence, unsure of what to say. He held the door open for her and they began walking up the staircase. He looked at her again, then laughed slightly. "What are you thinking about?" he inquired, gently nudging her in the side.
He glanced back, remembering something. "Oh, we forgot your friend's stereo. Should we go back?" he asked her with a tilt of his head that made him look like a puppy. And James was more of a puppy than he should be... but he was content to follow Lily around, so it worked. [/sub]
